Browsers

The CalRead (California Reading First) web site is designed to work in a variety of Internet browsers. We recommend you download the latest version of one of the following:

Downloads

There are a variety of file downloads available from the CalRead site, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. To read and/or print these documents you will need the appropriate Microsoft software installed on your computer. Additionally, we make PDF (Portable Document Format) files available for download. To view and/or print PDF files you will need the free Adobe Reader.

JavaScript

It is recommended that JavaScript (scripting) is enabled in your browser. If JavaScript is disabled, you may follow the instructions below for your browser.

Internet Explorer v5 or higher:

  1. Click Tools, then click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click the Custom Level button.
  4. Scroll to the Scripting section.
  5. Check Enable under Active scripting, Allow paste operations via script, and Scripting of Java applets.
  6. Click the OK button.

Firefox v1 or higher:

  1. Click Firefox, then click Preferences.
  2. Click the Web Features tab.
  3. Check Enable JavaScript.
  4. Click the OK button.

Safari v1 or higher:

  1. Click Safari, then click Preferences.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Check Enable JavaScript.
  4. Click the Close Window button (upper left).

Netscape v6 or higher

  1. Click Edit, then click Preferences
  2. Click on Advanced.
  3. Check Enable JavaScript for Navigator.
  4. Click the OK button.

Cookies

Cookies are small amounts of data stored by the web browser and associated with a particular web page. A cookie is a simple piece of text. It is NOT a program, or a plug-in. It CANNOT be used as a virus, and it CANNOT access your hard drive. Any cookies used by CalRead are automatically deleted when you quit your browser, and the information stored in the cookie is NOT personal or private information.
